Grasberg Mine, Indonesia

I was curious to know where is the largest gold mine in the world, when I learned about the Grasberg mine in the Province of Papua in Indonesia. This mine is located near Puncak Jaya which is the highest mountain in Papua.

Here is a photo of the mine that I got from the internet.

The surrounding view seems very spectacular and the mine pit actually adds up like a ‘mystery’ to the scene. I wonder how many gold bars could have been made out from the gold taken out from this mine. Indonesia is indeed rich in natural resources but then based on the article that I’ve read, it seems that majority of this mine is owned by the US while Indonesia only shares 9.3% of it.
